Moisturizing your skin: Another Alternative to Consider

Dry skin continues to be a common problem for many people. I posted an article about how to effectively moisturize your skin a while back. Plain petroleum Vaseline was featured as a prime consideration because it is devoid of dyes, fragrance, parabens, lanolin, formaldehyde and many other preservatives. Furthermore, it  (Vaseline) is readily available and inexpensive, compared to many lotions and other emollients.

Well, CVS now carries a topical moisturizer, Vanicream, that  previously  required Internet ordering. Mayo clinic Dermatology has recommended this preparation to patients with xerosis (severe dry skin) or eczema, according to one of my patients who made a trip there.

Vanicream, like plain Vaseline, has none of the above preservatives and extras, but it is a bit pricey, and is not as widely available in different retail stores. The pound jar cost about $16 dollars.

I was previously satisfied with plain Vaseline personally (yes, I have dry skin) but I must say, Vanicream does leave less of a residue of oil. This doesn’t matter that much to me but some of my female patients have complained about Vaseline residue on their clothing (especially under garments).

It is nice to have alternatives so place this on your list next to plain Vaseline, for moisturizing the skin. If you have eczema, moisturizing is half the battle.
